We explain and explore the fundamentals of clay construction, with coils and slabs, scoring and slipping; but after that we pretty much let them go for it (with support and supervision, of course)! We find that our youngest students bring lots of imagination, still uncorrupted by a lifetime of adult concerns, and we assist them in expressing their ideas in clay. Words such as color, form, shape, texture, and composition will be used, but the kids make it up as they go, and we give them lots of space, tools and clay to make it happen.

Demonstrations include altering pots on and off the wheel, in addition to using drawn patterns to hand build spouts and handles. Surface treatment demonstrations consist of slip inlay, and glaze decoration using wax and latex.

Lorna Meaden has been a practicing studio potter since the mid 1990’s. After spending many years as a maker, she went on to complete a Master’s Degree in Ceramics in 2005. She has been a featured demonstrator and lecturer at the National Council on Education in the Ceramic Arts. Cone 6 Glaze Workshop with John Britt

August 25 - 27, 2017 at The Wedge Ceramics Studio

This is a 3-day hands-on Cone 6 glaze testing workshop is designed to show students how to test a base recipe and get various colors. On Friday we will be preparing test tiles with a base glaze and ten colorant variations. We will fire on Saturday in the cone 6 electric and cone 6 reduction kilns and then on Sunday we will discuss the results when they are unloaded from the kiln.

The workshop will also be a general overview of ceramic glazes, focusing on but not limited to cone 6 glazes. We will discuss cones, kilns, firing dynamics and principles as well as applying those principles to various firing cycles. This will lead us into some basic classifications of glazes, like ash, celadon, temmoku, etc. It will be conducted in a casual question and answer format which will drive the content of the weekend. Glazes will be discussed in a practical and easy to understand dialogue designed to help potters gain an understanding of glazes, firing and glazing.

We will discuss how and why each type of glaze works and how you can achieve them, how to adjust your glazes and how to find new ones. We will discuss glazes from John’s new book: “The Complete Guide to Mid-Range Glazes: Glazing and Firing at cone 4 – 7”, but will go into more detail than the book allowed.
